Current Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev recently met to discuss Medvedev’s support for Nazarbayev’s initiative to convene the much needed OSCE summit in May 2010. Aside from this, both parties also discussed matters involving bilateral cooperation.

Prior to scheduling his trip to see Medvedev in Russia, the Kazakhstan President already considered Kazakhstan’s position as the new OSCE chairman. After 11 years, Nazaybayev thought it was best to call for an OSCE summit as soon as possible. The proposal was raised during a meeting held with the OSCE’s Permanent Council.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin believes that putting Kazakhstan in the realms of the influential security organization, OSCE, is a good thing for the entire organization. The Kazakhstan OSCE chairmanship will bring the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe into a whole new level.

In recognition of this, the Russian prime minister extends the best to Kazakhstan by extending his wishes for a successful stint as the new OSCE chairman.

In addition to this, Putin also shared that Kazakhstan is actually the first former Soviet State to hold the reins of the organization. He further expressed his hopes that the country will successfully obtain a universal nature and effectively address the vital issues of which the organization was created for. Vladimir Putin believes that the OSCE is a good venue for resolving security issues, as well as for promoting democracy throughout the continent.

The meeting of Russian and Kazakhstan parties concluded with an agreement for The Customs Union; which involves Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus; to take effect on July 1, 2010. Both parties signed a memorandum that entails the creation of a common economic space.

The Russian prime minister expressed his gratitude for this economic space, which, according to him, has been focused on and worked on for years now.
